At break-time the girls went to sit under the oak tree.

‘Let’s co-ordinate our treats so we don’t all bring the same stuff,’ Sophie said. ‘I’ll bring jellies, Riley, you bring chocolate and, Vanessa, you bring crisps, OK?’

‘I’m dreading it,’ Vanessa moaned.

‘Why? It’s going to be super fun,’ Sophie said.

‘Ugh, doing mud runs and kayaking in a freezing cold lake sounds horrendous. I’m not wearing the disgusting wetsuits from the adventure centre. Mum bought me my own one at the weekend. It’s the best you can get, so hopefully I won’t die of cold.’

‘I can’t wait to go,’ Sophie said. ‘Can you, Riley?’

‘Can’t wait.’ Riley tried to sound enthusiastic.

‘You don’t look like you’re keen at all,’ Vanessa said. ‘You look wrecked, Riley. Are you staying up late?’

‘Yeah, I was watching Netflix last night for ages,’ Riley lied. I wish, she thought. If only you all knew that I was actually stuck in a freezing cold car, crushed up against my mother, waking up every few hours panicking about my future.

‘Go to bed early for the next few nights – we want to be able to stay up late at the adventure camp,’ Sophie said.

Riley nodded, avoiding her friend’s eyes.

‘I’m bringing my own sleeping bag too,’ said Vanessa. ‘Their duvets will be disgusting. And my own shampoo and conditioner and hairdryer. And food. I’m not eating revolting chicken nuggets or whatever they serve.’

‘Why don’t you just not go?’ Riley was sick of her moaning.

Vanessa stopped applying her lip gloss and stared at Riley. ‘Because I don’t want to miss out, obviously. Everyone’s going to be banging on about it for weeks after, so I have to go.’

‘Well, then try to enjoy it,’ Sophie said. ‘I can’t wait to get away from my brothers for a night.’

Riley wished she could go. She loved the idea of being with her friends doing adventurous stuff. The sixth-class trip to the adventure centre was something they had looked forward to for months. How was she going to hide not going from absolutely everyone, including her mum?
